Jan 6, 2022 · The "p" is a serial number suffix. The Borsigwalde plant was one of several plants making Mauser 98K's. They started with serial number 0001 for each year, in your case, 1940, and ended with 9999. The next batch that year, started with 0001a, and ended with 9999a.

The next run would start at 0001a, and end at 9999a. The finish on the stock and metal, and lined out serial number on the band usually indicates a Czech refurbish.

Feb 10, 2010 · The normal Mauser process was to install and headspace the barrel, the using the receiver flat as a reference point install the sights using precise equipment. They didn't make many mistakes. So I think it possible that if the Yugoslavs rebarrelled the rifle they may have over tightened the barrel enough to move the sight(s) out of alingment.

The gun is worth fixing even if it takes a gunsmith to do it. They are great shooters even with less than perfect bores. I have a couple and my son-in-law is a Mauser collector.

Feb 20, 2023 · I am comparing your photos to my 1944 98k. Your receiver is different. Maybe yours is a 'small ring' receiver? Those would typically be Spanish or Swede. What caliber is your rifle? The Spanish did produce some 8X57 caliber rifles, but most were 7mm Mauser. Does your rifle cock on opening the bolt - or does it cock on closing?
