Its official designation was “German Infantry Model 1888”; but it is often listed in Germany as “Mauser and Commission.” This rifle was actually a development of the German Infantry Board or Commission and no receiver of this model ever bears the Mauser factory stamp.

The Gewehr 88 is also known as the "Commission rifle," or "Reichsgewehr," a name derived from the fact that the design was based on the specifications of a German military commission looking for a replacement for the older Model 71 and 71/84 Mauser rifles.

The Gew.88 rifle is often erroneously referred to as “Mauser” or “Mannlicher”, but in fact it is neither. Its bolt is a more or less indigenous design by German gunsmith Schlegelmilch, and its magazine loading system is an adaptation of the Mannlicher “en block” clip.

In this rather charged atmosphere, the German Gewehr Prfungs Kommission (GPK - Rifle Testing Commission) went to work. Initially, the idea was to revise the Mauser Gewehr 71/84 to use a small caliber smokeless powder round based on the old 11mm black powder Reichspatrone.
