The MG 42 (shortened from German: Maschinengewehr 42, or "machine gun 42") is a German recoil-operated air-cooled general-purpose machine gun used extensively by the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS during the second half of World War II.

In spite of its tendency to overheat, the MG-42 was an excellent weapon that was light-years of ahead of the US counterpart, the Browning M-1919A4 machine gun. Germany produced roughly 400,000 MG-42s during the war, some of which are still in active service.

The MG 42 is a gas-operated, roller-locked, belt-fed, fully automatic machine gun with an incredibly fast fire rate of 1500 rounds per minute. The 42 was built with a 21 inch barrel that could quickly be swapped out to prevent overheating (machine gun crews shared 7 barrels for one gun).

The MG42 boasts a unique design featuring a roller-locked recoil system and a stamped steel receiver. This makes it lighter than the MG34 and allows for a very high rate of fire, between 1,200 and 1,500 rounds per minute.

It is equipped with a wooden buttstock, Bakelite plastic grips, an original World War II bipod and a leather sling.
