According to 2005 SLK sales brochure the 420 Entertainment pkg contains 'integrated 6-disc CD changer, mounted inglovebox' and lists for $1,600. However, the current info for the 2006 SLK 280 on the MB website does not list the changer in the pkg, and additionally lists for $1,700.

At this price point ('05), there are a wide variety of brand-spankin' new cars that might quench my mid-life crisis, hard-top convertible, thirst: MB SLK, Vovlo C70, BMW 3, Miata (no interest in the VW EOS or Pontiac G6).

New MB engine (3.5L) is really something and BMW's new 3.0L is also incredible, although it produces approx. 13 fewer HP. Moot point based upon power delivery from that incredible I-6 and its lower weight, but the new MB engine is amazing as well. BMW may provide a better maintenance experience with everything covered for 4 years/50K miles.

Biggest downside is a lack of power, with only about 155HP pushing a pretty heavy car--in spite of MB's efforts to lighten the SL with this model. So if you don't mind it being a bit of a slug on acceleration, and if it passes its inspection with flying colors, the price seems fair enough.

The stats for MB's current "350" V6, factored up to a V8--4.67L making 357 hp and 344 ft. lbs. of torque--compares pretty well to the stats for the 500E powerplant that apparently offered awesome power in its day, and that makes me pretty interested to consider the next ML with the new V8, especially if it is in the ~$50K price range instead of ...

There was an SLK reviewer a couple years back who also was complaining about the lack of functionality with his iPod. However, he figured out (or someone from MB pointed it out to him) how to manipulate the iPod and select songs via the steering wheel controls.
