Feb 2, 2023 · Because of difference in shell sizes, the M40 could carry 20 155 mm rounds while the M43 could carry 16 203 mm projectiles. Neither the M40 nor M43 had a secondary machine-gun for local defence.

Sep 9, 2021 · This new vehicle used the M4A3E8 Sherman tank chassis and could mount either the M1 155mm Gun or the M1 8-inch Howitzer. The first prototype was produced in July 1944 and tests were very successful with both gun and howitzer mounted. As a howitzer, the M43 was used for firing a heavier 200 lb. projectile at a shorter range than the M40.

The M43 HMC had vertical universal ammo stores whereas the M40’s racks were designed for 155mm ammunition. The crew seats were folded up during firing missions.
