The BMW M42 is a DOHC straight-four petrol engine which was produced from 1989-1996. [1] It is BMW's first mass-production DOHC engine and was produced alongside the BMW M40 SOHC four-cylinder engine as the higher performance engine. The M42 was replaced by the BMW M44, which was introduced in 1996.

Block. The M42 Block is a development of the earlier M40 block, meaning it is possible to use an M40 block to repair an M42 engine. There is also a forwards compatibility with the M44 engine from the E36.

Feb 3, 2005 · The S14 is built off the dimensions of the early M10 4-cylinders, whereas the M42 and M44 were built off the much shorter (dimensionally) M40. An M42 is about 3" shorter than an S14. So, to answer your question....none of the S14 internal parts will fit the M42.

Mar 12, 2023 · To convert an M40 to an M42, you need a complete and functional M42 donor engine. Move over EVERYTHING from the M42 donor engine to the bare M40 block. The only benefit is keeping the car's original engine block with serial number and model (18 4 S1 vs 18 4 S2). This is useful in countries that frown upon engine swaps.

how good is the m42 block? « on: June 22, 2009, 04:39:16 PM » I had a blown head gasket, and after getting the head back from the machine shop, I´ve been collecting seals, hoses, sensors, gaskets, etc. to put it all back together, thinking if I replace all those worn out parts, I´ll probably won´t have to worry about them anytime soon.
