Wheatley came to the North British Railway (NBR) in 1867 and found that most of the locomotives lacked the power for the work that was required of them. He approached the problem of local and branch passenger locomotives in 1870 with his Class E (LNER J86) locomotives.

The North Eastern Railway (NER) Class E, classified as Class J71 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), was a class of small 0-6-0 T steam locomotive designed by T.W. Worsdell.

The North Eastern Railway Class E1, classified as Class J72 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), is a class of small 0-6-0 T steam locomotives designed by Wilson Worsdell for shunting. They had inside cylinders and Stephenson valve gear.

The NBR D Class (LNER Class J83) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives designed by Matthew Holmes for short distance freight, station pilot, and heavy shunting duties on the North British Railway.

Jun 6, 2008 · Wheatley quickly met this need with his new Class E (LNER J31) design. These locomotives were noted for being larger and more robust than the existing Hurst locomotives. To meet the urgent need, twenty six J31s were built between 1867 and 1869 by contractors (Neilson & Co. and Dubs & Co).

Forty of these new Class D (LNER J83) engines were delivered in 1901, twenty each from Neilson, Reid & Co, and Sharp, Stewart & Co. The entire class was built with steam brakes, but ten were quickly converted to the Westinghouse brake system.

The NBR F Class (LNER Class J88) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives, designed by William P. Reid on the North British Railway. [1] They were used for dockyard shunting duties.
