The Holmes 6ft 6in Class M (LNER D31) engines started out as three different classes, the "574", "633", and "729" classes. These were rebuilt by Reid or Chalmers and were grouped together as one class.

In terms of locomotive taxonomy, the LNER had a superficially simple classification system that got a bit messy under close examination. Where it has been considered prudent therefore, subclasses have been identified rather than classes in order to link to the appropriate articles.

When the LNER was created in 1923, a new classification scheme was drawn up that could accommodate all the inherited steam locomotives and future new classes, and provide useful information about the features of a given class.

The rebuilds resulted in both the D27s and D28s resembling the Holmes Class M (LNER D31), with the exception of small details such as the front of the smokebox and the exact shape of the frames.

Nov 8, 2021 · Built at Cowlairs in December 1906 as NBR No. 888 and withdrawn in November 1948 still as LNER No. 2449. This mixed traffic design of twelve locomotives proved to be very successful, becoming a basis of all future NBR 4-4-0 designs.
