
NBR N class - Wikipedia
The NBR Class N (later LNER Class D25) was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The class was designed by Matthew Holmes (Locomotive Superintendent) and later rebuilt by Holmes's successor, Reid. [1] A total of 12 were produced.

These locomotives were designed by Holmes for the North British Railway (NBR) in preparation for the re-opening of the Tay Bridge and through workings between Burntisland and Aberdeen. Designed for faster running, the D25s were built with 7ft diameter wheels.

The LNER 4-4-0 'American' Locomotives D1-D24. The 4-4-0 was introduced to Britain in the 1850s with outside cylinders. The inside cylinder form became the archetypical British express locomotive in the late 19th Century. When superseded by Atlantics or 4-6-0s the type was versatile enough to continue on secondary passenger duties in many areas.
