Following the merger of the GCR into the London & North Eastern Railway, the class became known as the LNER Class C4. In 1925, several C4s were fitted with the LNER's trademark "Flowerpot" chimney, with one locomotive, No. 6085, also modified to fit the LNER composite gauge - a modification that the remainder of the class underwent between 1936 ...

A C4-hauled working from Manchester to Plymouth via Banbury and Bristol, set a British record for the longest through working. This would last over twenty years, until the East and West Coast London to Scotland express services would start.

The LNER 4-4-2 Atlantic Locomotives Britain's first Atlantic appeared on the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in 1898 as an enlargement of the ubiquitous 4-4-0 for express work, building 116 examples of various designs.

While the 4-4-2 locomotive design was chosen as the superior design, and was repeated in quantity, the basic 8C design was sound and used as the basis of the Class 8F (later LNER Class B4), the main difference being smaller driving wheels of 6 ft 6 in (1.981 m) diameter.

When the LNER was created in 1923, a new classification scheme was drawn up that could accommodate all the inherited steam locomotives and future new classes, and provide useful information about the features of a given class.

See Locobase 10691 for the one C4 that was converted to a 3-cylinder locomotive. When taken up by the LNER in the 1923 grouping, these engines became the C4 class.

Jun 5, 2022 · Anticipating heavier traffic loads, the Great Central Railway (GCR) placed an order for four express passenger engines with Beyer, Peacock & Co. in 1903. For comparison purposes, two were 4-6-0s (LNER B1) and two were Atlantics of GCR Class 8B (LNER Class C4).
