The North Eastern Railway Bogie Tank Passenger (BTP) locomotives were designed by Edward Fletcher in 1873. The locomotives were for hauling passenger services on branch lines. They had an 0-4-4 wheel layout and a total of 124 locomotives were built. They were designated G6 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). [1]

In 1873 Fletcher proposed a new class of "Bogie Tank Passenger" (BTP) 0-4-4T tank locomotive for hauling passenger services on branch lines. The first batch of twelve was delivered by Neilson & Co by June 1874.

The NER Class 290 (LNER Class J77) was a class of 0-6-0T steam locomotives of the North Eastern Railway (NER), rebuilt from an earlier class of 0-4-4T, the NER Bogie Tank Passenger (BTP, later LNER Class G6).

The North Eastern Railway's (NER) G6 0-4-4WT Bogie Tank Passenger ('BTP') locomotives were sturdy robust engines. With the introduction of the G5 0-4-4T (NER Class O) locomotives during the late 1890s, large numbers of G6 BTPs became surplus to requirements.

Compared to the F8 s, the G5s had smaller driving wheels and greater coal and water capacities. A total of 110 were built between 1894 and 1901, across seven batches. The later batches replaced many of the BTPs (LNER G6), which were then converted to 0-6-0Ts (LNER J77) or push-pull locomotives.

May 3, 2020 · Referring to the RCTS publication “Locomotives of the LNER Part 7” the BTP locos are present under Class G6. According to the R.C.T.S. only forty-six survived until the grouping, dwindling to thirty-six at the close of 1923 with only nineteen of those being auto-fitted.

Dec 14, 2023 · Some 120 BTP class were built with the aim of providing reliable services on branch passenger trains, and until the advent of the ‘O’ class (LNER class G5), from 1894 did just that.

On becoming the North Eastern Railway’s (NER) Locomotive Superintendent, Wilson Worsdell switched the NER’s passenger tank locomotive policy from his brother’s 2-4-2T class A (LNER F8) design, back to a design resembling Fletcher’s 0-4-4T BTP (LNER G6), with his O class design (LNER G5) design.
