Despite the name, LLVM is not a Virtual Machine in the traditional sense - it is a computation model and representation that lends itself well to the task of manipulating code.

The former is correct - you only need to build LLVM and Clang in debug mode if you want to debug the compiler. If you want to debug the application produced, you need to compile it with debug symbols - i.e. pass the -g flag to Clang when you build your program - and that is enabled no matter in what mode LLVM and Clang were built.

Feb 6, 2013 · LLVM, though designed with C/C++ in mind, is not specific to these languages. Having more possible integer types gives you more flexibility. You don't have to use these types, of course - and I'm guessing that, as you've mentioned, any C/C++ frontend to LLVM (i.e. Clang) would probably only generate i1, i8, i16, i32 and i64.
