Aug 21, 2005 · The Lee-Enfield No. 5 rifle is a shortened and lightened version of the No. 4 rifle; while the L8A1 through L8A5 rifles are 7.62mm NATO conversions of No. 4 rifles. Beginning shortly after WWI, trials were conducted at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) in Enfield on a rifle with a receiver-mounted backsight.

To confuse later students of grenade development the system introduced different ‘L’ number series based on the “modifier” so there exists L1A1 notations for Grenades Rifle, Grenades Discharger and Grenades Hand.
