The dramatist Liang Chenyu of Kunshan soon adapted it to a full-length opera, Huanshaji (“Washing the Silken Gauze”), a chuanqi (“marvel tale”). It gained wide popularity, and the new dramatic style came to be known as kunqu (“songs of Kun”).
