Kofu (甲府, Kōfu) is the largest city and capital of Yamanashi Prefecture. The city is located in a large natural basin surrounded by mountains on four sides with Mount Fuji in the south. The region receives substantial amounts of sunshine, which has contributed to its accolade as the birthplace and center of Japanese wine production.

As of 1 April 2019 [update], the city had an estimated population of 187,985 in 90,924 households, [1] and a population density of 880 persons per km 2. The total area of the city is 212.41 square kilometres (82.01 sq mi).

The majestic Mount Fuji stands to the south and can be seen from Shosenkyo Gorge, a canyon by River Arakawa.

Kofu is the capital and largest city of Yamanashi. It is a particularly popular destination among history buffs, who come to tour sites associated with the famous sixteenth-century warlord Takeda Shingen. These sites include the Kofu Gozan, or Five Great Zen Temples of Kofu, Kai Zenkoji Temple, and Takeda Shrine, which enshrines Shingen as a deity.

Kofu is surrounded by mountains, with Mount Fuji, Mount Kimpu, Mount Shirane and Mount Kai-koma enclosing Yamanashi Prefecture's capital. An easy day trip, Kofu is only 90 minutes by train from Tokyo.
