Oct 15, 2020 · Kautz moved back to Brown County in 1859 and bought a 163 acre farm near Higginsport in Brown County. He raised horses, corn, and wheat on his farm, but his cash crop was Broadleaf tobacco. In October 1862 he enlisted as captain of Company G, 59th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Continual Expansion Has Served Kautz Farms Well
During the late 1960s, the development of the mechanical tomato harvester saved the California processing tomato industry and led to great expansion of production. As others were entering the industry, Lodi tomato farmer John Kautz saw difficulties on the horizon and began diverting his acreage to wine grapes.
Mr. Kautz is Chairman of Ironstone Winery and owner of Kautz Farms. Currently, Mr. Kautz oversees approximately 7,000 acres of wine grapes.
