Jul 16, 2004 · There was a time there were lots of shops in Detroit (home of DeVlieg) with lines of jig mills doing work such as die sets. The DeVlieg "spiromatic" positioning feature was advertised as being within .0002 for repeatability in the 1950's.

Jan 28, 2014 · I bought a Devlieg Jig Mill (3B-48, 14-221) at an auction a while back. Got it home and set up but it has a few issues. I topped off all lube and checked electrical for continuity (at least I think I did). Have had spindle turning, feeds in and out, had rapids in an out but now it won't. No feeds or rapids on platen or head.

Jan 10, 2004 · Moore no. 3 and 1 1/2 jig borers have inverted V ways on the X axis..sort of like a lathe. So the only thing holding the table down is the weight of the table and to some extent the screw and nut assembly. Some older models such as original Linleys, and perhaps the Atlantic, do have dovetail ways and are more like a mill.

Dec 23, 2016 · Next I bought a Vernon (later Sheldon) jig borer/vertical mill. When I mention this I often get a remark that you can’t mill on a jig borer. This machine is not on par with Moore or other “real” jig borers and it has beefy dovetails, a good speed range for smaller mills and both fine and lever feed on the spindle. I love the depth stop.

Sep 16, 2008 · Jig borers were made with the intention to do some light milling, to skim a surface flat and perpendicular to a bore for example. Considering the expense of the tooling (Moore and Linley have their own proprietary tooling), and the possible cost of upkeep of the spindles, you may be better off digging up a small mill.

You can ruff out a work piece on any ratty old mill and take a clean up cut on the jig borer and come out with a masterpiece. And it's easy! Jig borers are quiet as a mouse and strong as a bull.

In the late 1970's a milling machine that could control position within + or - .0002" was unusual. They were manufactured for about 10 years.
