As Cyclone, she became a member of the Justice Society of America. Maxine Hunkel is the granddaughter of the original Red Tornado, Abigail "Ma" Hunkel, an honorary member of the Justice Society and later caretaker of their headquarters. Maxine grew up idolizing her grandmother's allies in the JSA.

Cyclone creates a tornado to power Atom Smasher against Sabbac. Hunkel watched as the crown disappeared, quickly rallying the team to head for Shiruta and attack him from the Hawk Cruiser, but Gregor destroyed it, causing the team to crash-land to survive.

Shortly afterward she is introduced to the rest of the JSA and her fa girl personality becomes evident in her bubbling reaction to meeting her heroes, particularly fellow teen Stargirl.

Nov 9, 2022 · Courtney Whitmore was the youngest hero in the JSA as the Star-Spangled Kid. Working alongside the team gave her wisdom and experience, leading her to become Stargirl. She was a seasoned veteran during the next iteration of the JSA, and Cyclone ended up filling the role Courtney had.

Maxine officially debuts as Cyclone in Justice Society of America #3, honoring both the Red Tornado and her former sidekicks, the Cyclone Kids (Maxine's Aunt Amelia "Sisty" Hunkel and and Uncle Mortimer "Dinky" Jibbet).
