May 8, 2008 · Mt. Iwaki is a pointy peak towering over Hirosaki city in Aomori Prefecture. The summit affords outstanding panoramic views, and sports two free mountain huts. The hike: From the parking lot, head up the trail to the left of the chairlift station (yes, you can take a ski lift practically to the top!).

Nov 27, 2023 · Mt Iwaki (岩木山) stands as the highest peak in Aomori prefecture with an elevation of 1,625 meters (5,331 feet). It is also sometimes referred to as “Tsugaru Fuji” because of its conical shape and its location in the Tsugaru region of Aomori.

There are a couple of ways to get there (just looking at the map, I count five trails), but for this post I'm choosing the one closest to the summit. Tokyo to Shin-Aomori. The closest main station is Shin-Aomori Station (新青森駅). If you are from Tokyo, you can go to Aomori via: Overnight bus. JPY4,000 one way if using JBL bus pass.

Take in views of Mount Chokai, Mount Iwaki, Mount Moriyoshi, Mount Hayachine and the Hakkoda Mountains. The Ura-Iwate Traverse is lined with Maries' fir and Erman's birch. Look out for seasonal flowers such as the pink-petaled Hakusan rhododendron (June to July) and the Japanese gentian's purple blooms (mid-summer to autumn).
