This review showed that the stable isotopes of H, C, and S could be utilized to establish the origin, depositional conditions, and thermal maturity of organic matter of shales, as well as oil–oil and oil–source rock correlation studies, which are critical to hydrocarbon exploration.

Results of this study show that the average isotopic compositions of the C 15+ aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of oils sourced from terrigenous or marine organic matter are identical.

Stable isotopes of light elements have provided acceptable segregation of oils from different origins for years already. More recently, the determination of stable isotopes of strontium has proven to be a reliable tool in determining the geographical origin of food products.

The main objective is to protect the sample from evaporation and exchange with atmospheric water vapor. Samples should not be filtered unless they contain oil (e.g., mineral oil added to rain collectors to help prevent evaporation) or contain abundant particulate matter. Bottle rinsing, chilling, and addition of preservatives are unnecessary.
