As a lifelong resident of New England, very close to where these towns are located, I would parse Innsmouth as being similar, kind of being "in the mouth."

Sep 18, 2023 · Narratively, Innsmouth is a mess. The flashbacks and non-linear structure made things hopelessly confusing. The restrictions on spending XP were annoying and pointless (and didn't even make sense if you tried to wrap your head around Innsmouth's narrative structure.) But gameplay-wise, it's very strong, except that finale.

Sep 8, 2021 · Innsmouth was my favorite campaign so far, but for me the story structure and XP timing created more confusion than it seemed worth for the thematic aspect. There wasn't a clear logic I could follow for the XP spend timing so it didn't feel like it was adding anything or emphasizing the timeline jumps.

I read that as the appearance of the Shoggoth in dreams triggering the Innsmouth look (or the dreams start when the look becomes dominant), placing the Shoggoths at a kind of Demi-god assistant to Dagon, and that the things on the edge of town were Deep Ones far gone or possibly the treasures they were being delivered from the depths.
