ILRI’s Nairobi campus includes high-end biotechnology laboratories as well as the Mazingira (Swahili for ‘environment’) Centre which conducts environmental and climate change research and education in Africa, providing state-of-the-art facilities, analytical equipment and methodological approaches.

Today, ILRI’s research in Ethiopia is focused on: Poultry , including identifying climate resilient, locally adapted, farmer preferred and economically viable chicken strains, and improving indigenous and commercial chicken strains through selective breeding.

The Mazingira Centre is an environmental research and educational facility established by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi. Research at the Mazingira Centre focuses on understanding and managing the environmental footprint of livestock systems without hampering productivity.

All areas of ILRI’s holistic livestock research for development programs are well covered in Tanzania including animal genetics, herd health, animal feeding, markets and inclusive value chain development, gender, nutrition, and sustainable livestock systems.

ILRI is actively engaged in several CGIAR initiatives and platforms. Impact areas. Climate adaptation and mitigation; Environmental health and biodiversity; Gender, equality, youth and social inclusion; Nutrition, health and food security; Poverty reduction, livelihoods and jobs; Research support.

Signs at the entrance of the campus prominently display the CGIAR logo next to the ILRI logo, and the CGIAR flag flies next to the ILRI and Government of Ethiopia flags. In 2019, the Ethiopia campus hosted the CGIAR System Council and brought together CGIAR centre research around the key CGIAR themes.

ILRI is operating in East Africa with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
