The IBM System/370 (S/370) is a range of IBM mainframe computers announced as the successors to the System/360 family on June 30, 1970.

In developing System/370, IBM set out to meet three major objectives. The first was performance. It had to have faster processing, more storage capacity and greater flexibility than the popular System/360, which had debuted in 1964.

The IBM System/370 (S/370) was a model range of IBM mainframes announced on June 30, 1970 as the successors to the System/360 family. The series maintained backward compatibility with the S/360, allowing an easy migration path for customers; this, plus improved performance, were the dominant themes of the product announcement.

The System/370 continued the tradition of the prior System/360 by expanding the instruction set, and adding hardware support for both virtual memory (except for the first two models announced), and the new ability of virtualization. They ran a variety of software, such as MVS, and the newer VM/370. The System/370 was supplanted by the S/390.
