The IBM 3590 is a series of tape drives and corresponding magnetic tape data storage media formats developed by IBM. The first drive, having the IBM product number 3590, was introduced in 1995 under the nickname Magstar.

The 3590 tape drives, models B , E, and H, can all use the 3590 High Performance (blue) and Extended High Performance cartridges. The 3590 Model Bxx can read and write at a density of *FMT3590.

The 3494 uses the 3490E Magnetic Tape System, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3590, and the IBM System Storage Tape System 3592, individually or in combination (Figure 1, item 3). With z/OS, the tape drives are connected to the host using a tape control unit.

The 3590 B-Ultra-SCSI tape drive attaches to all OS/400 releases that presently support 3590 devices: V3R2, V4R1, and later with the 6501, 6534, or 2729 IOP features with appropriate PTFs.

The IBM Magstar 3590 models B11 and E11 are rack-mounted tape drives with an Automatic Cartridge Facility (ACF). The 10 cartridge ACF allows the drives to be used as a mini-library with access to up to 1.2TB* of data.
