History of IBM magnetic disk drives - Wikipedia
The 1311 is about the size and shape of a top-loading washing machine and stores 2 million characters (12,000,000 bits) (or, in so-called "Load Mode" on an IBM 1401, a sector can hold 90 7-bit characters, or 12,600,000 bits total [33]) on a removable IBM 1316 disk pack. [34]
IBM’s 1311 introduced 14 inch media diameter as a new industry standard in October 1962, and the final 1311 drive variation was withdrawn in January 1975. The reduced disk diameter enabled a much smaller disk drive than predecessor 1301/1302 fixed media machines which used 24 inch diameter media.
1962: Disk packs offer portability & security | The Storage
In October 1962 IBM Announced the Model 1311 that reduced the media diameter from 24” to 14” and introduced the concept of a removable disk pack that combined the direct access of disks, with the advantages of unlimited offline capacity, portability between separate computer systems, and secure offline storage characteristic of tape units ...

The 2311, with a removable 1316 disk pack, was based on the IBM 1311 and had a theoretical capacity of 7.2 MB, although actual capacity varied with record design. [47]: 31 (When used with a 360/20, the 1316 pack was formatted into fixed-length 270 byte sectors, giving a maximum capacity of 5.4MB.) In 1966, the first 2314s shipped. This device ...
The idea was that the 1311, which we're going to start with today, transformed the industry by going to a smaller disk than had ever been used before in a disk drive and it came up with a removable disk pack, which made possible many applications for these products that …
The IBM 1311 Disk Storage Drive (Figure 1) provides a fast, efficient means of disk storage for any system to which it is attached. Each drive is capable of storing 2 to 2.98 million alphamerical characters. There are five models of the IBM 1311 Disk Storage Drive. Various combinations of these models are used
