How is the structure of triiodide ion (I3-) possible?
Aug 20, 2018 · So we just need to determine why it is favourable for $\ce{I- + I2}$ to react to form $\ce{I3-}$. The simplest answer is distribution of charge. Rather than have a single negative charge on one atom you end up with a structure that has approximately half a negative charge on two different atoms if you take the resonance structures at face value ...

inorganic chemistry - Molecular orbital diagram for I₃⁺ cation ...
Apr 13, 2020 · $\begingroup$ Yes I already found information on I3- but thank you. In a homework we are asked to compare the bond orders of I3- and I3+ after creating their MO diagrams. After much searching and trying to figure out the MO diagram for I3-, I found out that it's very easy and only involves the three 5pz orbitals in a "4 electron 3 center bond."
Bond length in ICl2- and ICl2+ - Chemistry Stack Exchange
May 26, 2015 · The iodine atom in $\ce{ICl2}$ is what is termed hypercoordinated (or hypervalent). Basically, this means that the 3 atoms combine to produce 3 molecular orbitals (the 3-center 4-electron model).
inorganic chemistry - dsp3 and sp3d hybridization — what is the ...
Nov 14, 2015 · $\begingroup$ @quintopia No it doesn’t. Xenon is essentially unhybridised as is fluorine. Xenon’s $\mathrm{p}_z$ orbital forms a four-electron-three-centre bond with the two fluorine atoms.
vsepr theory - How do I figure out the hybridization of a particular ...
Mar 17, 2013 · I've drawn out the Lewis structure for all the required compounds and figured out the arrangements of the electron regions, and figured out the shape of each molecule. I'm being asked to figure out the hybridization of the central atom of various molecules. I found a sample question with all the answers filled out: $\ce{NH3}$
Why does SO2 have a larger bond angle than H2O, H2S, and NH3

Describe the bonding in a tribromide anion, what is its structure?
In fact, tribromide ion has the generic formula $\ce{AX2E3}$ according to Lewis diagram. Where $\ce{A}$ is the central atom, $\ce{X}$ an atom bonded to $\ce{A}$ and $\ce{E}$ a lone pair on $\ce{A}$.
Oxidation state of the sulfur atoms in the thiosulfate Ion
Feb 11, 2015 · What are the oxidation states of the two inequivalent sulfur atoms of the $\\ce{S2O3^{2-}}$ molecule? For all I know is that Lewis Structure does matter in most of the cases.
Why is the H−C−H bond angle in сhloromethane larger than 109.5°?
Dec 15, 2016 · Symmetrical tetrahedral molecules (like $\\ce{CH4}$) have a bond angle of $109.5$. Those with lone pairs in place of one atom (like $\\ce{NH3}$) have bond angles less than $109.5$. The standard
