May 30, 2007 · 20 Hwacha and about 10 Swords/Axes to actually kill softened defenders. Took 27 turns to conquer him and lost 8 Hwacha and no other units. Needless to say, he had some Archers but a ton of promoted Axes/Swords that the Hwacha shredded. For comparison purposes, I decided to re-simulate the invasion but with stock Catapults instead of Hwacha.

Jul 14, 2005 · The hwacha are not obsolete, but they are best for attacking melee units. Remember that cats/hwacha are better for attacking defenders in the field but the trebs are better attacking cities. You may want to declare on Shaka but let him come into your territory (no war weariness for losses in your cultural boundaries).

Jan 17, 2013 · It gets siege promos, but it will also get the "archery" promos versus terrain. So it ends up once you have +30-45% on the terrain type, it's better than the crossbow even with the unit penalty AND it's way better against cities (crossbow gets penalties and hwacha will get bonuses). That's probably worth higher upkeep.

Jan 5, 2009 · You obviously don't understand how Flanking works now. If a unit like a Horse Archer is able to retreat from a battle then he gets to inflict additional damage to any siege weapons that are in the stack. With enough Horse Archers, you can completely destroy all of his Hwacha's even if they never actually win any battles.

Jun 25, 2012 · Hwacha is a souped up crossbow, not a souped up trebuchet. It excels in city defense and turtling, but it is a lot weaker attacking cities.

Aug 7, 2006 · Axeman vs Hwacha should be 5 vs 7.5 And all bonuses in combat (except strength promotion) are applied to the defender, so it would be: Axeman vs Swordsman on hill = 5 vs 4.8 Axeman vs Swordsman in forest = 5 vs 6 Axemen vs Swordsman on forest hill = 5 vs 7.5 So the Hwacha should be chosen.
