Throughout the 1990s, Air Force units steadily converted older M16-type rifles and carbines into GUU-5/Ps. While they shared a common theme of having collapsible buttstocks and 14.5-inch barrels, the new firearms were often each a bit unique.

United States Air Force GUU-5/P Carbine. The GUU-5/P was a result of United States Air Force making ad-hoc upgrades to its GAU-5 series. The barrels and flash suppressor were replaced with the longer 14.5-inch (370 mm) barrel with a 1-in-12 twist, but the weapons retained their original designations.

This was from another spare 80% lower…a tribute to what I had back around 1992 in the USAF. What was the twist rate on the barrel of your issued carbine, do you remember?

Nov 17, 2023 · The idea was a 601 converted to GUU5/P configuration. I used a Nodak lower filled with 601 parts, most real. Pretty sure the mag catch is a reproduction though, the button is standard M16.

Feb 11, 2014 · Since I ditched the 300 BLK build, I wanted a good 5.56 carbine. I love Retro KISS with slab side lower and non-forward assist uppers, but I wanted a 1/7" twist barrel so I could shoot 77 Grain MK 262 Mod1 ammo. The answer is my GUU-5/P carbine.
