Picking out a nesting site, they will fan out the long aigrettes on their back like a peacock, then raise their neck up high, then snapping the head and neck backdown low. The yellow lore around the eye turns a vibrant green in breeding phase.

Dec 30, 2023 · To start off, I live on the coast of central Florida and we have a lot of neat birds to watch around here. Herons, fish crows, pelicans, ibises, ospreys, I've even seen a roseate spoonbill fly over my workplace once. A few members of one species in particular visits me on my lunch break outside every day for the last year or two - great egrets.

Feb 17, 2025 · Great set of that Egret Morris, consuming what I think is a Skip Jack? Man, those fins are so sharp (don't ask how I know) I am always amazed at how shore birds can swallow them down, barbs and all. It's definitely a one-way affair, headfirst, I wouldn't want to see it change its mind and regurgitate it with those barbs, they'd dig in like anchors.

Aug 11, 2023 · This is one of one, the Hybrid offspring of a 5lb Great Blue Heron (M) and a 3lb(F) Great Egret. Confirmed by genetic testing, photographed in Florida.

Apr 23, 2005 · I am not overly familiar with great white egrets, (being english), and i dont have the benefit of seeing the bird but i have seen quite a few pictures of birds in breeding plumage with tail feathers this long. of course if what i suggested had happenned it may well of occurred somewhere else in a more polluted and more stained area of water.
