Mar 3, 2015 · You need a grain mill to crack grains. A hand crank one like the Corona will work. you set the grinding plates loose. You can find one Ebay for under $50.. I just buy whole organic corn from Azure Standard. It's human food grade and cheaper than the Scratch n Peck feed grade corn. We currently don't have any chicks. I got rid of our grinder.

Jan 23, 2011 · No doubt, a big operation feeding 1000's of birds, it is very worthwhile to have their mill and feed their field grown grains, adding in their own supplements. Bulk grains- I can get a quality, 4 grain scratch for $8 a 50 lbs. That price reflects a buck for the mill and a buck for the store retailing it over the bulk grain spot price.

Feeding just DDG and a few scraps of fish, meat and bugs will not work. The birds will not eat DDG straight up (at least not much of it), it has to be mixed to be eaten well.

Does anyone buy feed in 1 ton bulk? How do you store it?
Mar 2, 2025 · I can go through a ton in about 4-5 months. I am also purchasing a portable grain mover for about $300. These are one time start up costs which will more than negate my first tote, but after about tote 3 in a year, I will be even. The biggest cost is the silo (about $1000), then the portable grain mover ($300.). How do others handle 1 ton of feed?
