A Grid Point Wind and Temperature (GPWT) forecast provides a text-based display of forecast wind speed, wind direction and temperature at specified heights above mean sea level (AMSL).

Graphical Area Forecast (GAF), Low-level Grid Point Wind and Temperature (GPWT) Forecast and AIRMET advice are designed primarily to meet the needs of pilots flying in the airspace between the surface and 10,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL).

The GPWT chart presents wind and temperature information as a table of numbers contained within a grid that is overlaid on a map of the forecast area showing the coast line and state borders.

Winds aloft information is now presented in another graphical product, the Low Level Grid Point Wind & Temperature (GPWT) forecasts. These divide the country up into 1.5 x 1.5 degree squares and show the winds at 1000,2000,5000,7000,10000 and 14000 ft.

GPWTs outline wind and temperature profiles for a three-hour period, from the Surface to 14,000 feet. Your flight plan route is overlaid as a red line on the charts, so you can visualise which grids your planned track passes through. Each grid square contains three columns of data: And six rows, each one representing an altitude AMSL: 9.1.2.
