The Poles had turned Gotenhafen into the largest and most modern port on the Baltic even before Germany seized it in 1939. The Germans had turned it into a major naval base, an extension of Kiel’s Deutsche Werke shipyard, whose drydock and heavy cranes were capable of servicing the largest warships.
