"Git gud" originated with Metal Gear Online. The meaning of the phrase has shifted slightly back and forth over time. When Dark Souls came out, a lot of threads were started on 4chan where people didn't understand the mechanics or mindset needed to play. As a response, people would just say "git gud".

And people would post stuff after finally clearing that hurdle about how they ‘finally got gud’. Even in a pvp context, I feel like most people threw it around as a joke.
