The PPSh-41 (Russian: Пистоле́т-пулемёт Шпа́гина-41, romanized: Pistolét-pulemyót Shpágina-41, lit. 'Shpagin's machine-pistol-41') is a selective-fire, open-bolt, blowback submachine gun that fires the 7.62×25mm Tokarev round. It was designed by Georgy Shpagin of the Soviet Union to be a cheaper and simplified alternative to the PPD-40.

The Germans in WWII took captured PPShs and converted them by inserting a 9mm barrel and a magazine adapter to accept MP 38 and 40 magazines. No modifications to the bolt face was necessary. The German designation for the 7.62x25 PPSh was "MP717 (r), and for the 9mm conversion "MP41 (r)".

Chronically short of small arms to issue to troops for a variety of reasons, the German Army often reissued captured weapons when available in quantity.

At one time, the German Army converted a few captured guns to 9mm by changing the barrel and magazine housing. Early in 1952, death ended the career of Georgii S. Shpagin. In little more than a decade, he had risen from relative obscurity to the status of chief designer of infantry arms.

Jul 30, 2018 · We needed something for May 9 and I suggested we film the ultimate competition of WW2 submachineguns – German MP40, British “Sten” MK II, Thompson M1921 and Soviet PPSH-41. All of those weapons were in Kalashnikov concern reference firearms collection.
