
GWR 3901 Class - Wikipedia
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 3901 Class is a class of 2-6-2 T steam locomotives rebuilt from class 2301 'Dean Goods' 0-6-0 tender locomotives. In 1907, a surplus of Dean Goods locomotives, and a requirement for more suburban tank locos, led to the rebuilding of twenty of the Dean Goods into 2-6-2T 'Prairie' tank locos.

Eleven 4900 Hall Class locos were renumbered into the 3900 range. Twelve 2800 Class 2-8-0s and eight of the 2884 Class were renumbered into the 4800 range. To make way for these, the 4800 Class 0-4-2Ts were renumbered to the 1400 range.

After three years of satisfactory trials with 4900 Collett placed an order with Swindon works and the first of the new two-cylinder Halls entered service in 1928. It is likely that the pressure to develop a more powerful express locomotive took priority so that the King class 4-6-0 was introduced a year before in 1927.

Sep 23, 2024 · When the GWR was nationalised as part of British Railways in 1948, its steam locomotives retained their numbers unchanged and new steam engines built to GWR designs continued to be allocated numbers in the same way as the GWR had done. However, its diesel locomotives were completely renumbered.
