The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16- cylinder engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW).

GP40MC. The MBTA's GP40MCs are a radical new look for the commuter rail trains, not only because of their zig-zag paint scheme, but also because they are hood units and not cowl-bodied like the F40s. They seem to me to be modern versions of Amtrak's GP40TC, also having the extended body for a second HEP engine.

The GP40 is powered by EMD’s 16 cylinder, 645E3 prime mover, producing 3,000hp, and much like its predecessor, the GP35, was successful and proved reliable for many class 1 and shortline carriers.

In late 1965 EMD advertised nine new models equipped with this new engine, offered in a variety of horsepower ratings, sizes, and wheel arrangements. Although, not every railroad at that time needed - or could handle - the big SD38s, SD40s, and SD45s.
