Produced from 1972 to 1986, the GP38-2 helped inaugurate Electro-Motive’s “Dash-2” series of locomotives and became one of EMD’s all-time best sellers. With over 2200 engines sold throughout North America, rare was the railroad that did not roster these reliable, second-generation EMD workhorses.

Over the years many aging GP40-2 have had their turbochargers removed to improve reliability and henceforth continued to exist as GP38-2. While the GP39, with its poorer reliability compared to the GP38, did not become an economic success, EMD was able to sell larger numbers of the improved GP39-2.

Canadian Pacific Railway 3021-3040 are GMD GP38-2 locomotives built in 1983. They are classed by CP as DRS-20c. Units 3037 and 3039 have been upgraded and reclassified as GP38-3 locomotives; the rest of the series has been equipped with Q-Tron electric governors to enable increased haulage.
