The GCR Class 8C was a class of a pair of 4-6-0 locomotives built for the Great Central Railway in 1903–1904 by Beyer, Peacock and Company. They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the 1923 grouping and received the classification B1.

The Robinson Class B1 / B18 (GCR Class 8C) 4-6-0s At the turn of the century, the Great Central Railway (GCR) used 4-4-0s for its main express services. Although these could handle the relatively light traffic, management was attempting to attract traffic with fast schedules.

The Great Central Railway Class 8, known as the London and North Eastern Railway Class B5 following the 1923 Grouping, was a class of fourteen 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed to haul fast goods trains, in particular fish trains.

In this issue, I will look at the locomotives that company built for the GCR and its antecedents. Before embarking on an examination of the locomotives, it is worth looking at how the railway company, as we recognise it, came to exist.

Although different from the later GCR 4-6-0s, the pair of 8Cs (B1 in LNER parlance) remained in steady, if varied, service right through World War II. Reclassified B18 to clear the way for Thompson's B1 class, the pair were retired and scrapped in 1947.

The first GCR 8K (LNER O4/1 class) class locomotive (966) was built in September 1911. A superheated boiler was fitted of similar size to that used by Robinson on his C4 Atlantics. A leading pony truck was fitted to take the extra weight.

Alled Greedy is a Red Tender Engine! The new design was very similar to 4-6-0 the two locomotives of the (GCR Class 8C, later LNER class B1) except that they had smaller driving wheels.
