The Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) are a series of military vehicles based upon a common chassis, varying by payload and mission requirements. The FMTV is derived from the Austrian Steyr 12M18 truck, but substantially modified to meet United States Army requirements.

Originally based on the Steyr 12 M 18 truck, the FMTV has evolved into a vehicle family with payload capacities above 10 tons. The US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) awarded Stewart & Stevenson the first FMTV award in October 1991.

The A1 and A1R vehicles incorporated automotive improvements features including a more powerful diesel engine, a better transmission and brakes, added corrosion protection, computerized engine diagnostics, and stronger drive line engine/transmission/differential connection components.

In September 1999, the US Army approved production of the A1 model FMTV. Following a competition with Oshkosh Truck Corporation, Stewart & Stevenson was awarded the FMTV A1 Competitive Rebuy production contract in April 2003.

The A1 had a new engine, upgraded (automatic) transmission, electronic data bus, an anti-lock brake system and interactive electronic technical manuals, as well as trailers. The A1 is the vehicle that still is manufactured.

The FMTV A1P2 Underbody Armor Kit (UAK) is a survivability upgrade to the currently fielded FMTV A1. The FMTV A2 is a set of hardware and software improvements to the FMTV A1 trucks designed to expand the capabilities of the FMTV.
