Produced by North American Aviation, the Sabre is best known as the United States' first swept-wing fighter that could counter the swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed dogfights in the skies of the Korean War (1950–1953), fighting some of the earliest jet-to-jet battles in history.

The Canadair Sabre is a jet fighter aircraft built by Canadair under licence from North American Aviation. A variant of the North American F-86 Sabre, it was produced until 1958 and used primarily by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) until replaced with the Canadair CF-104 in 1962. Several other air forces also operated the aircraft.

With the formation of NATO in 1949, the Canadian government made the decision to re-equip the RCAF’s front-line fighter squadrons with modern aircraft and selected the F-86 Sabre.

Between 1954 and 1957, the overseas ferry unit completed thirty crossings of the North Atlantic and delivered more than eight hundred aircraft to the RCAF, Royal Air Force, and other NATO members without the loss of a single pilot.

The RF-86 Sabre was a reconnaissance version of the highly successful F-86 fighter. The bulges next to the cockpit housed cameras. But as the gun ports forward of that attest, it still packed a punch in the form of six 50-caliber machine guns.

In 1954 Greece received the first F-86. The aircraft were not new, but retrofitted, by North American, RAF Canadair CL-13Mk4. These planes equipped the 341, 342 and 343 Squadrons. They remained in service until 1965, when they were replaced by F-5A. The Sabre was the first Greek aircraft that could break the sound barrier in dive.
