Erwise is an early discontinued web browser, and the first that was available for the X Window System. [3] [4] Released in April 1992, the browser was written for Unix computers running X and used the W3 common access library. [5]

The story of Erwise, world's first graphical web browser. How did it start, who were the developers and, most importantly, why did it not succeed?

Erwise builds most easily (in my experience) of all the truly ancient browsers besides LineMode, but it actually runs successfully on very few platforms (due possibly to Motif implementation issues that were reportedly a problem at the time).

Even though Mosaic – the basis for Netscape – certainly kickstarted the web revolution, it wasn’t the first graphical web browser at all – that honour goes to Erwise, developed by four Finnish college students in 1991.

Erwise is certainly a well-finished browser for W3 systems, proffesionally produced. We only have binaries at the moment for sun4 and decstation use, and there seem to be a few outstanding problems with running on on some displays (like decstation).
