A new FCS by Krupp-Atlas, the Elektronik EMES 18 was installed. It was a further development of the EMES system installed on the Leopard 2 and incorporated thermal imaging sights, laser rangefinder and a ballistic computer, which no longer required the use of the optical systems in the two bumps, one either side of the turret.

The EMES 18 has two new sights on the top of the turret that did not require the "bumps" those previous optical systems had. The Leopard 1A5 variant could be equipped with bolt-on polycarbonate (Lexan) armour plates, which improved the armour's effectiveness.
