Ellis (Eli) Reed (born 1946) is an American photographer and photojournalist. [1][2] Reed was the first full-time black photographer at Magnum Agency and is the author of several books, including Beirut: City of Regrets and Black In America.

Photojournalist Eli Reed joined the faculty in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin in January 2005 after a 30-year career that took him around the world for numerous national and international publications.

Reed was the first black photographer to join the legendary photo collective Magnum Photos in 1982 and was also a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.

ELI REED, is an accomplished photographer that began his career as a freelancer in 1970. His work from El Salvador, Guatemala and other Central American countries attracted the attention of Magnum Photos in 1982, where he became a full member in 1988.

“I was the good kid, always reading, painting, quiet, never getting in trouble,” says of his early years. Born in 1946 in Linden, New Jersey, Reed was aged 4 or 5 when he moved with his family to Perth Amboy, a few miles south, as a result of a fire that destroyed their home.
