Aug 18, 2010 · Ed Moose, who for 32 years headed two of San Francisco's best-known restaurants, the Washington Square Bar & Grill and Moose's, died Aug. 12. Mr. Moose, a native of St. Louis, was 81.

Ed Moose was born in 1929 in Saint Louis, Missouri. He grew up in an Irish Catholic Family in an Irish Catholic Neighborhood. His father lost his bank job as a result of the Depression’s “bank holiday” and turned to making “booze” for a living.

Restaurateur Ed Moose died this morning at California Pacific Medical Center at the age of 81. With Washington Square Bar & Grill maitre d’ Hal Thunes, Ed Moose started the annual Penny Pitch in North Beach to benefit St. Anthony’s. It has so far run for 33 years.
