Oct 10, 2013 · The 540i will be faster and with decent suspension will handle close to or as nice as an E36, but it will "feel" bigger and heavier. The E36 will get better fuel economy by a bit and most the maint. costs will be less.

Nov 26, 2009 · I love the feel of the power on the 540i, but love the handling and agility every time I get back in the e36 especially in traffic. Both feel very solid to me and each has its own distinct advantages. I had an e36 before the e39. Really can't compare head to head.
