There are 4 types of oar locks - ribbed, round, north river and clamped. Ribbed and round will require oarlock safety chains so you don't drop them into the water. They will also need oar buttons to keep them in position and leathers to protect them from wear. The North River type keep the oarlock in position and the oar perpendicular to the water.

Avoid using these sockets for anything but cheap homemade oarlocks. I recommend bedding the plates in PL400, which is available for under $3 for a caulking gun tube from any hardware store. It sticks to nearly anything that’s not oily and stays somewhat flexible indefinitely, similar to 3M 5200 but without the “marine” price.

Making your own oars is easy just cut a blade from 1/4" plywood and nail & glue it to a stick. I prefer shafts that are around 1.25" in diameter. I use a router to round off the edges so they are more of an octagon shape.

It is surprising how much force is put into the oarlocks, so be sure to make a very stout installation of the oarlock socket on the boat. Below, you will find a guide on how I built my oars. Many sources are available online to calculate the proper length of oars.
