The 55 was introduced by DAF in 1967. This rear wheel drive car was available as a 2 door coupe or familiar station wagon. Its continuously variable automatic transmission was innovative for its time because it did not required traditional gears and offered a smooth ride. The DAF 55 had a 1.1L inline four engine and was produced until 1972.

It was introduced in December 1967 and it was the first car produced with a 4-cylinder in-line water cooled engine. In terms of engine at least, the DAF 55 moved into the medium-sized car bracket. There was a 1,108 cc four-cylinder Renault engine under the bonnet that produced 45 bhp at 5,000 rpm.

In December 1967 the DAF 55 was developed as a more powerful version of the 44. The redesign was extensive, and with the co-operation of Renault, DAF built a new 50bhp version of the 1108cc water-cooled, four-cylinder in-line engine.
