Jul 21, 2013 · The side that has a thin gesso layer really gives a grip, but it is almost impossible to cover with color, beacause of the fact that gesso is stiff material. I also found out that it dulls the colors. I decided that gesso is not really suited as underlayer for working with CP on MDF board.

Feb 28, 2015 · I mix colored pencils of both wax and oil type with acrylics and it seems very durable. Water based ones that dissolve will of course dissolve when they meet acrylic paint since its wet. Clear gesso can be a good way to layer the two mediums. I tend to use colored pencil with thin acrylic washes, not thick paint.

I mentioned using pigment alone to tint the gesso or buying pre-colored gesso, but he didn’t like that idea much. He also wasn’t crazy about the higher cost of oil primer.

Aug 30, 2021 · The colored pencils saved it from being a total train wreck. The very gritty gesso, holds on to CP like a magnet. Used Koh-i-noor 3.8 mm Polycolor lead refills like crayons as well as the Blick Studio Colored Pencils from the Portrait set (appear to be identical to Koh-I-Noor). You can even smudge the CP’s with your finger on the gritty surface.

At first I really liked it because it really helped me to judge values on the board, and I’ve been having some trouble with my values. But after doing several paintings, I’ve noticed that they all seem a little dull and lifeless!

Apr 28, 2008 · Acrylic gesso used by itself does not stiffen the canvas so much. It also is not the best sealer unless used in at least 3 or 4 full or near full strength coats. From what I have heard it is fine to paint directly on a RSG sized canvas sized in 2 coats in the way nit-wit described.

Aug 16, 2003 · When you paint your oils over a smooth acrylic gesso, your brushes make a whispering sound, not a friction sound. This sounds silly but is important. A gritty gesso is not good for oil painting (although people tend to think that the oils stick better to gritty gesso). I tested LIQUITEX, LASCAUX, W&N, ROBERSON’S, etc… Trust me on this.

Jun 26, 2007 · Working into a wet base is very nice, but the pure black base is something I never could work with, and if you have a pre disposed opinion on working with black in general, well….you may not like it.. I do like coating a canvas with black or colored gesso though, and then working wet on dry on top of it. Or wet into clear (oil or other medium).
