The crew has run into these people before.

For the Ciconians do not belong completely to the world of the Iliad, but are, rather, a bridge from this world to the fabulous world of the Odyssey. In fact, an element from the latter world—the slaughter of the Sun’s cattle—seems to have been adapted to the Ciconian episode.
