May 27, 2015 · The re-install of Windows would have done the same thing as a CHKDSK i.e. cleaned up unreadable sectors of the disk. In your case, I am guessing you only have one partition - i.e. the system partition C that you just re-installed Windows 8.1 on. If this is correct, you may be able to run CHKDSK C: /F - there is no need to run diskpart.

That would slightly reduce the available disk space, but it isn't permanent (you can get it back, with effort). I would be surprised to see chkdsk report an SSD sector as bad though. I wouldn't run chkdsk to find bad sectors though.

chkdsk /r does the same thing as chkdsk /f only it also checks for bad sectors on the disk and recovers any readable information. Running chkdsk /r implies that also chkdsk /f is run. chkdsk /f only checks for disk errors, not bad sectors. Microsoft has a detailed page for chkdsk. Yes I would try and get your data off the drive before running a chkdsk. You could also try something like SpinRite if your data is important to you. Another option would be making an image of the drive using Ghost, LiveState Recovery, or StorageCraft ShadowProtect.

The /r /f flags causes chkdsk to run in read-write mode, so then it's not generally safe to just kill the process. It needs to be terminated gracefully.
